Students Win at Youth Symposium
The Pickens Garden Club sponsored several PMS students at the 2014 Youth Symposium in Columbia, SC, on March 29th. Ms. Louise Hope sent in the entries for the middle school, and Logan Crowe (6th) won first place for his incredible locomotive engine made from recycled Dr. Pepper cans. Other winners were Claire Lee (8th), Ashlyn Raby (7th), and Josh Mitchell (6th). All three of these students won second place for their grade level in Garden Poetry. Logan was also recognized at the next level of judging by the South Atlantic Region. Congratulations on a job well done!

Dress Code Reminder
Parents, we need your help!  As warm weather approaches, please ensure that your child dresses appropriately each day according to the following guidelines:
  • Skirts, dresses, and shorts should all fall within one inch above the knee
  • Spandex shorts, yoga pants, and leggings must be covered by a top that comes to one inch above the knee
  • Tank tops are to follow the “four-finger” coverage rule; shirts should not be cut out under the arms
  • Sheer shirts and blouses need a dress-code appropriate top underneath them
  • Skin-tight, revealing apparel is not allowed
We want our students dressed for success each day at Pickens Middle.  Thank you for helping us make this happen!

Beta Club Elections and Field Trip
Beta elections will be held at the May 7th meeting.  Any currently active Beta member interested in running for office needs to see Mrs. Riddle to sign up to be placed on the ballot.  Also, there will be a Beta trip to Gravitopia on May 21st.  Forms and money should be turned into Mrs. Riddle by April 21st (all Beta requirements must be up to date).
Pickens Middle Continues Its Quest to GO GREEN!
This year Pickens Middle continues to work on its Green Steps program.  A $500 merit grant was awarded to Ms. Louise Hope by DHEC’s Champions of the Environment.  This grant assists in beginning the development of a Conservation Gallery, an inner concreted courtyard area that will be available for classes, teachers, and even parents to visit to learn more about conservation of our environment.  The project is just beginning, and students are involved in the beautification and educational process.  For more information, read the attached grant application.  We certainly welcome volunteers and assistance!
Science Day Camp Information
This year's Science Camp will be a one-day experience held on Tuesday, June 10th from 9am until 3:30pm at Pickens Middle School.  More information about the camp can be found here; students must sign up by May 23rd in order to participate.  Please contact Mrs. Laura Anderson with any questions.

Pickens Middle Goes Green!
Keep the Midlands Beautiful, Sonoco Recycling, and DHEC's Office of Solid Waste Reduction and Recycling established Green Steps Schools in 2003 as part of South Carolina’s “Resource Conservation Challenge.” This environmental education initiative encourages individual schools to take annual steps toward becoming more environmentally responsible. Pickens Middle School has taken the environmental challenge this school year and will become certified as a Green Steps School. Check out these documents that describe the two projects (water and recycling) completed by the Community Education class, led by Ms.Hope.
